I'm a black person who laughs at a racist show. There--I said it.
Life in Pieces is often hilarious, usually insightful, and fully racist. Black people appear as if this is a plantation narrative: they're 'the help,' they're 'in the background' (check out Toni Morrison's Playing in the Dark--a profound analysis of the way black people function as 'shadows' in American narratives), and they're referenced as a joke (check out the scene with the black leather jacket episode).
Oh, they're so funny, those 'black people.' Black people drive Ubers. They park cars. They serve food. But they don't live in the neighborhood, and they certainly aren't friends with any of these people. These are the whitest people in (what looks like) California. Even the Hispanic relative (Colleen--whose family is so pathetic they didn't even show up for her ridiculously haphazard wedding) makes her own racist Latino jokes (that's generous of her). But she isn't allowed to create a mixed baby--nope. She has to adopt the potentially whitest baby possible from the most degenerate character on the show: a rude, mean, narcissistic, potty-mouthed high school dropout (mom's-dating-her-ex) blonde girl's out-of-wedlock, one-night-stand baby is preferable to the mixed infant of a loving couple.
I get it.
I guess the writers couldn't figure out how that would work. Non-whiteness is just too complicated. And that's just racist. But I'll keep watching this show in spite of the racist message (black people don't exist except as a shadowy, useful backdrop for white people's more interesting, relevant lives) because it's important to see what writers are (not?) thinking about black and brown people in America these days. And it's important for me to remember that there are segments of this nation that live their daily lives without any meaningful relationships with people of color--no friendships, no intimacies or shared experiences . . . until they want to be served.
